I’m going to say something please correct me if im wrong.
Yesterday I watched Taylor Swift’s new music video, “Shake it Off” and to be honest I really enjoyed it. Ive always loved to watch people dance and I think that it was very nicely done and was pretty cute(though the middle part was unneeded, if you ask me) But not so soon after I noticed people referring to the black people featured in Swift’s video as “Props” and that her featuring the twerking(I think that’s what it’s called?) in her video was cultural appropriation.
Now, I think it’s kinda odd that she featured people who weren’t white in her videos and she still managed to attract negative attention? It’s weird to me. And maybe I have no place saying this but part of me thinks some are saying this because they’re still on the whole “Hate Taylor Swift” bandwagon, I don’t know. And its not even like I like her. Heck, I don’t listen to her music and she does seem to date a lot and have those exes be the main focus of her songs, but I think it’s kinda going too far.
Now, today Nikki Minaj put out her new video and it seems like a lot of people like it. I even watched it(Or tried to, but once more, I don’t listen to her music) And her video features twerking too? Way more than Taylor Swift’s, even. There are photoset after photoset of it and no one is saying a single thing about cultural appropriation, at least not that ive seen.
I have also heard people complain, concerning Swift’s video, that the only part black girls are featured is in the twerking segment of it, which isnt true. There are black people in every dance segment but the ballet one, I think. And basically my entire reason for posting this is that Taylor Swift is being called out for the cultural appropriation of twerking(Which I don’t believe) and using black people as “props”(Which I also dont believe) But the same isn’t going for Nikki. I would have figured it was. I’ve seen twerking referred to as an African dance and as far as I know, Nikki isn’t from africa(And I don’t count being black in general as being African((I’m not sure if this would present an issue with my argument, but yeah I’m black too))) so she shouldn’t be able to do it either, right? I just don’t understand. But to be honest, I dont even think I’m going to get a response, so w/e.
